The easiest way to get to Arugam Bay from Colombo is by car/van. When you arrive at the airport a dedicated driver will meet you and give you a ride to the surf camp by air-conditioned private taxi. The drive usually takes 4-5 hours, but could be shorter depending on traffic and weather conditions and at what time of day or night you arrive. Upon departure you will get a ride back to the airport.

You will travel across the island from the west coast to east coast, so along the way you can see a lot of the inland country, such as the beautiful mountains and tea plantations. We will drive through Udawalawe National Park, where you might even see a wild elephant only one meter away from you.

About the Camp

SAFA Surf Camp is a locally owned surf camp in the eastern Sri Lankan coastal town of Arugam Bay. Known for its great waves and chilled surfer vibe, it is the perfect place to learn to surf.

Our team at SAFA (Surfing Access For All) team are locals who grew up around Arugam Bay. Their knowledge of the area, the ocean, the currents and the tides is one of the best around. They will have you paddling, standing on your board, catching and riding waves in no time, all with a big smile on your face.

Our beachfront villas frame the camp. You'll find a large communal area in the middle for relaxing after surfing. The kitchen facilities, beach bar, hammocks and sun loungers are available for all to use.

We can serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Fill up on porridge, eggs, fruit or traditional Sri Lanka curry and rice, all made from locally sourced ingredients and freshly prepared by our local chef. You can also enjoy drinks from the beach bar as well as a range of snacks to feed your hungry stomach after the surf.

During your stay we want to provide you the best surf experience so we think that a main point is practicing yoga
after or before surfing.

Yoga keeps you focused on what you are doing. It helps you to gain strength and releases tension from your body.

In our daily yoga class after our morning surf session you will have a sequence of meditation and pranayama followed
by the asanas and at least – and that’s what every student loves – savasana or corpse pose, meditation – focus
on what you are doing, pranayama – fill your body with new energy and asanas – keep your body flexible, gain,
strength and release tension.

Give Yoga a go while you stay at SAFA.

A TYPICAL WEEK ON OUR SURF PROGRAM IN SAFA SURF CAMP

Arrival Day
Early afternoon arrival, relax and settle in, and meet Fawas who will give you an introduction to the resort and the surf program for the week.
They'll be a welcome dinner at 7.00pm at the camp where you will get the chance to meet the other surfers who will be joining your SAFA family for the week (or two).

Day 1
We wake-up at sunrise (early bird catches the worm!) for tea/coffee and a banana. Pack a bag of boardshorts or bikini, your brand spanking new SAFA Surf Camp rash vest, suncream (!) and, of course, heaps of enthusiasm, and you'll be met by your coach who will select a board suitable for your first session. We set off at 5am and travel by truck or tuk tuk to the beach. At the beach we split up in to groups based on your surfing ability so that you'll be in a group with a handful of other surfers that are at the same level as you. Your coach will spend the first 15 minutes on the sand explaining surf skills and setting a drill to warm you up, and then it's straight out into the surf. After 90 minutes of surf we head back to the camp for breakfast, juice and post surf chats. There's an optional yoga class after the morning session then you have the rest of the morning and early afernoon to chill, read, swim, sunbathe or take a walk into town. then head back to the beach around 4.30 for surf session two. Your first day ends with a feast of fresh Sri Lankan cuisine and some cold beers with your SAFA family.

Day 2 & 3
Our timetable can vary due to local tides and weather conditions, but we tend to head out at 5am everyday. Meet to grab a banana and a coffee, then we all jump into the truck and head to the beach. After your morning surf, we have breakfast and yoga then if we have enough videos we will have theory session then you can chill until after noon surf. We head back to the beach at around 4pm, have 90 minutes in the water and then head back to camp. You can choose to eat at the camp or head into town for dinner.

Day 4
It’s usually on day four that you wake up in the morning feeling like you can't get out of bed, and we know the pain! So day four is a rest day. You can sleep in and spend the day swinging in your hammock, explore the town, relax on the beach, hire a scooter and drive to the jungle or take advantage of our local wildlife, beauty and culture with a drive to Kumnar National Park to spot elephants, water buffalo, alligators and hundreds of beautiful birds. We can also help you arrange tours and excursions including trips to Yala National Park, a day trip with local food and temple visit, lagoon tour, and kayaking.

Day 5
After a day off you'll be feeling refreshed and ready to hit the waves again and we're back to our 5am surf. Although it can be a little tough pulling yourself out of bed everyone is always glad they did it and nothing beats jumping in the sea for a dawn surf, especially when the sea is empty and the surf is at it's best. After a big breakfast, there's yoga and then free time before the afternoon session. Much like the other days we head back to the beach around 4pm for a surf and then it's back to the camp around 7pm. You can choose to eat at the camp or head into town for dinner.

Day 6
The last day has both surf and theory sessions, yoga and afternoon chilling but since it's the last night we put on a bit of show for you. Once we are all back at camp after our afternoon surf we meet to watch a photo slideshow of the weeks surfing highlights and then stay at the camp for our final meal together followed by beers and a beach bonfire.

Departure Day
There is no arranged surf or theory today but if you don't have to leave until later in the day you can grab a board and head to the beach if you fancy one final surf. Check out is at 12pm but you are welcome to hang at the camp for as long as you want.

ONCE YOU GET HOME
A few days after you get home you'll get an email from the team, making sure you arrived safe and sound. We also send you a link to all the vidoes and photos of you surfing when you write a review on google. It's a really cool souvenir and we post loads on our Facebook page, Instagram, and Youtube Channel so you can show off to all your friends.
